#51 | Just Keep Dancing: Living Your Dreams in the Face of Adversity with Shala

About This Episode

Dua Lipa’s assistant choreographer for the British Music Award, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s co-star in the Mobile Strike Super Bowl commercial, and primary dancer in Jax Jones music video, “Breathe” (viewed over 50 MILLION times), Shala, is a professional dancer, teacher, and choreographer based out of London. Her aura of peace and focused energy is easy to see, and in this episode, she shares with us the years of ups and downs that lead her to where she is today.

“I gave up dancing so many times in my life, but then I realized that I kept on going back to it. It was like a lover.”

“It is easy to get caught up in the hype and forget who you are.”

Shala was raised both in the UK and in Japan, and in her early twenties, she moved to London with a suitcase, a dream, and barely enough money to live on. Agents immediately told her that to be successful, she would have to have sex with influential people in the dance industry (which wasn’t the case.) In the early days of her career, she fought depression, dealt with the loss of her grandmother, and ignored the sea of voices telling her that her dreams would never become a reality.

“I’m at the bottom. And I can see there’s a hill. But I can also see that I have strong legs to climb that hill.”

Join us for a compelling conversation about creativity, faith, and perseverance, in which Shala will share with us how she continues to reach her goals without getting lost in “the hype.”

“We carry a sense of caring. That is the beauty of women.”
